About Us

The Canadian Network for Human Health and the Environment covers broad human health-related environmental issues relating to air, water, soil, food, climate change and consumer products.

This network is funded by the Safe Environments Programme of Health Canada (SEP).  While its principal target membership is health-based non-governmental organizations which have an active interest in environmental impacts on human health, membership is also open to government policy-makers, researchers and healthcare professionals.

Background:

In March 2007 SEP convened a workshop to with non-government organizations as part of a larger initiative of the Safe Environments Programme of Health Canada to strengthen and formalize relationships with its stakeholders. The focus of that consultation was to determine the best ways to engage health NGOs in providing input to the development of SEP priorities and in providing feedback on specific SEP policies and initiatives.  Arising from that workshop SEP developed a call for proposals to establish and deliver a Healthy Environments NGO Network. Through MERX, many organizations responded and we are very pleased that the New Brunswick Lung Association was awarded the contract.

The network provides a mechanism to increase co-operation between the Government of Canada and the health NGO sector, increases the opportunity for dialogue among all stakeholder groups in the network throughout the entire public policy process, provides an NGO lens for policy development and reviews conducted by the federal government, and provides information that is more readily available and accessible in order to increase the understanding of one another’s broad policy objectives.

The work of the network includes:

    • Coordination of knowledge sharing through emails and regular bulletins
    • Opportunities for networking through the website, topic-based teleconference calls, web
seminars and member surveys that seek input on priorities.
    • A delegate selection process for Government consultation activities.
This will be limited to NGO members only.

Benefits to members:

    • Increased access to new and timely information on health and environment
      policy initiatives, ground-breaking research studies,
upcoming conferences, funding and employment opportunities.
    • An opportunity to make policy and other priority recommendations to
Health Canada, through our twice-yearly member survey
    • Access to web seminars on new research or other topics
      recommended by members
    • Contact with a large group of individuals for answers to your
questions, either  through email or web bulletin boards.
    • An opportunity to attend Health Canada consultations through the
delegate selection process (Canadian NGOs only)
